In the quarry industry today a weighing system must provide a total solution to all site needs - WBB Minerals order state of the art weighing system from Shering Weighing which does just that.
The WBB Minerals Group have a simple company philosophy; to consistently provide premium-quality products backed by the highest standards of technical support and customer service. Equally important to WBBM is their emphasis on health and safety, essential in busy quarry environments. Attaining these goals is no easy task. Therefore, it is no surprise that WBBM require state of the art systems to help achieve them. It is perhaps less of a surprise that WBBM have entrusted the development of their latest driver operated weighing systems to Shering Weighing Limited, a company synonymous with integrity, innovation, and quality in the weighbridge industry.
The Brief………
WBBM’s brief to Shering was to design a fully computerised state of the art Driver Operated Weighing System capable of controlling the flow of all weighbridge traffic through the quarry from point of entry to exit. WBBM re-iterated that the new weighing system must incorporate the most advanced weighing technology in existence as well as fulfil their health and safety criteria. Pedestrian safety is of paramount importance in all quarries today and WBB insisted that the weighing system should help minimise risk by allowing the flow of traffic and information without the driver ever having to leave their vehicle.
Shering have supplied computerised systems to WBBM for over five years. The weighbridge operator driven solution has been steadily developed over that period and is operational at all WBBM’s UK sites. The new driver operated solution is the next step forward and the system is designed to work with the operator controlled solution.
The new system has to:
- Gather all essential loading information from each vehicle as it enters site via the weighbridge
- Provide the driver of the arriving vehicle with site access and loading documentation – without the need for the driver to leave their vehicle
- Send electronic details about the arriving vehicle and its load to the loading shovels, where the information is displayed on a dashboard mounted hand held PC, preparing the shovel operators for the arriving vehicle – again ensuring the driver remains safely in the cab
- Provide outbound (loaded) vehicles with the required Conveyance/Delivery Notes
- Be fully integrated with WBBM’s (centrally hosted) Sales Order Processing System
Team Work………
The engineering and IT experts at Shering Weighing have been working closely with various departments at WBBM developing a weighing system which will meet the requirements of the brief as well as both companies' high expectations. The state of the art system has been made possible as a result of such a strong joint team development.
Shering Weighing are supplying several of their flagship 16x3m 9020LP Surface Mounted Weighbridges complete with Command 900 Series Instrumentation. Two pole mounted Driver Terminals will facilitate bi-directional traffic across the weighbridge, each one housing an LCD Display Unit with Weight Display, a Keyboard with Function Buttons, a high speed Ticket Printer and an Intercom Unit. A PC in the Weighbridge Office will control the system and portable hand held PCs will be mounted in the cab of each Loading Shovel.
Mode of Operation……………
The system specified will weigh vehicles both into and out of the site via the weighbridge. The flow of traffic over the weighbridge will be controlled by traffic lights mounted at either end of the weighbridge. Pole Mounted Signs and suitable Road Markings will ensure that vehicles queue at the appropriate positions.
Inbound vehicles will drive onto the weighbridge and use the keyboard on the Inbound Driver Terminal to enter the information requested by the system. The system will support multiple languages, and each driver may choose to receive instructions in the language which best suits them. When data entry is complete, the driver will be issued with a Loading Instruction. Similar instructions will be sent electronically to the hand held PCs in the Loading Shovels, alerting them to the vehicle's arrival and its loading requirements.
This streamlined loading operation will ensure the correct product can be loaded without either driver leaving their cab whilst at the same time freeing up valuable staff for other tasks. It will also speed up the loading process and improve the safety aspects of the system, essential benefits to the overall operation.
When loaded, the outbound vehicle will return to the weighbridge and use the keyboard on the Outbound Driver Terminal to complete the transaction and receive the appropriate Conveyance Documents. Once departed, the vehicle will be removed from the display on the Hand Held PC.
A help button will also be available on each Driver Terminal which, when pressed, will send a message to each of the handheld computers - allowing site staff to contact the driver and resolve the problem via the intercom system or direct intervention.
What the Customer Thinks…………

Quality and outstanding levels of service have always been a constant in Shering and WBBM’s relationship. WBBM have recently carried out a series of questionnaires at all sites using Shering equipment. The results were unanimous: great quality, great service, great company.
The weighing system will be up and running at WBBM's Redhill Quarry soon and is scheduled for installation at two further quarries in the near future. Needless to say, the roll out is eagerly anticipated by all parties involved.

Shering respond to the need for a dual mode of weighbridge operation at Hampshire Waste Services new ERF at Chineham, Basingstoke
Veolia ES Ltd recently commissioned Shering to design a weighbridge system for their Integra North Energy Recovery Facility at Chineham near Basingstoke. This facility is the first of three ERFs planned for Hampshire which will recover waste that cannot be traditionally recycled. The ERF will process approximately 90,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste each year.
The weighbridge requirement was to deliver a system which could operate manually during the day and seamlessly transfer to an unmanned operation after hours. For analysis and reporting purposes, the need to capture accurate data on the waste processing operation was essential.
Shering's in house design team was able to fulfil all customer requirements using Shering Command 9000 software to configure the system. Command 9000, a product based on years of research and development, provides a standard Windows Interface and Microsoft SQL Server (MSDE) Data Storage and is completely flexible allowing total integration into the Veolia mode of operation.
Using both an In and an Out weighbridge, the application allows a fully manned operation during the day with the facility to control weighings from either the control room or the gatehouse. The driver proceeds onto the In weighbridge and communicates with the operator (who can be situated at either the gatehouse or the control room) through an intercom. The operator proceeds with the weighing transaction using Shering Command 9000 Software. All information essential to the operation of the busy landfill site is captured onto the system for assessment. The tare weight is calculated at the Out weighbridge on leaving the site.
After hours the unmanned mode is operational, allowing vehicles to be weighed in and out without the requirement of an operator. An access token is carried by drivers and this holds various details such as identification, type of waste carried and source information. Any changes to the information can be inputted manually by the driver using a keyboard situated in the driver terminal. The unmanned system takes the weight and instructs the driver to proceed through the plant. Upon re-identification and tare weight being taken at the Out weighbridge the driver can exit the plant.
Command 9000 was designed to give Veolia and other customers a software solution which would realise the main value added benefits of using computer software - ie complete flexibility and open access to stored data, a point often over looked in the quest for suitable programs. By reducing the complications in accessing data and making data transfer and reporting a streamlined operation, the customer is assured of saving time and money. Command 9000?s unique structure minimises the requirement for bespoke work, which can have time and cost implications. However, the extremely high level of configuration enables individual requirements to be easily met.
Douglas Shering, Chairman & Managing Director at Shering Weighing Ltd feels strongly that weighbridge manufacturers need to invest time and money into getting computerised weighing systems right, "At Shering we invest greatly in our software department. A busy recycling plant can reap huge benefits from having a weighing system capable of sustaining accuracy long term and improving effective waste management. The options available on our Command 9000 system will help companies manage their day to day businesses and reach their targets. It is vital that the system is secure and reliable, yet powerful and intuitive to use. As always, my in house design team worked very closely with Onyx on this project. Working as a team we were able to meet their exact requirements, providing a system which will work for them and this world class ERF at Chineham."
